One weekend afternoon I went to a newly opened bookshop. It was quiet inside, with the smell of coffee in the air. I leafed through a novel about Chinese history, found it fascinating, and in the end decided to buy it. The owner said they run reading events on weekend evenings — I plan to join next time.

140 chengyu

Four-character idioms in three layers: the literal sense, the figurative one, and the story they come from.

画蛇添足 成语
huàshétiān
Literal
to draw a snake and add feet to it
Figurative
To ruin something by overdoing it; to add a pointless, superfluous touch that spoils what was already fine.
Story
In the state of Chu, a man performing a sacrifice rewarded his retainers with a single jug of wine, not enough for all of them. They agreed it would go to whoever finished drawing a snake on the ground first. The man who finished first, feeling he had the lead, picked up the jug and, to show off, began adding feet to his snake. Meanwhile another man finished his, snatched the jug away, and said: «Snakes have no feet; how can you draw them on?». He drank the wine, and the man who had added feet lost everything.

FAQ

Real questions

What exactly is free?

The whole engine: spaced repetition, text import, the Reader, audio and data export. Plus the content: curated HSK 1–2 vocabulary, all 371 grammar points and all 140 chengyu.

What does it cost, and what does it unlock?

€24.99, once. It unlocks the curated HSK 3–6 vocabulary, the advanced 7–9 band, and the ready-made decks. Whatever gets added later lands behind the same button, at no extra cost.

Is there a subscription or ads?

No. Never.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No. There are no accounts, and the entire app works offline.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes: 7 days, free, no card. If you don't buy afterwards, your progress is not wiped.

Where is my data?

On your device. There's no cloud and no servers: you can export everything to a JSON file whenever you want, and import it on another device.

Does one purchase cover both iOS and Android?

No: each store handles its own purchase and, with no accounts, they can't be linked. Your data does travel with you via export/import.

Which HSK does it cover?

The complete HSK 3.0, levels 1 through 9. When a word was also in HSK 2.0, that tag is shown alongside — we never convert levels by eye.
