Where does 恍然大悟 come from?
It does not come from a particular tale but from Buddhist and literary vocabulary: 悟 ("to awaken, to grasp") evokes understanding that arrives all at once, an idea linked to Buddhism, while 恍然 captures the instant when something blurry turns sharp at a stroke. The phrase settled into classical prose as a set formula for the moment one finally understands what had been eluding them.
How is 恍然大悟 used? Two examples
- 老师又解释了一遍，我才恍然大悟，原来题目这么简单。
The teacher explained it once more and I suddenly got it: the problem was that simple all along.
