HSK 1 Adjectives

很 + adjetivo

Adjectival sentences (很 + adjective)

Structure Subject + 很 + Adjective

In Chinese the adjective IS already the predicate: you do not need 是 ("to be"). But a "bare" adjective sounds incomplete or comparative, so it takes an adverb in front; the most neutral one is 很. That is why 我很好 just means "I’m fine" (here 很 barely means "very"). Negate with 不: 我不忙.

Examples

  • hěnhǎo

    I’m fine.

  • jīntiānhěn

    It’s hot today.

  • hěnpiàoliang

    She is very pretty.
