Question words (什么, 谁, 哪)

Structure same order as the answer

Question words (什么 "what", 谁 "who", 哪/哪里 "which/where") stay IN THE SAME SLOT where the answer would go; they are not moved to the front as in English. 你去哪里？ is literally "you go where". Because of this, you don’t need —and can’t— add 吗 with them.

Examples

你nǐ叫jiào什shén么me名míng字zi？
What’s your name?
他tā是shì谁shéi？
Who is he?
你nǐ去qù哪nǎ里lǐ？
Where are you going?
