HSK 2 Complements

动词 + 来/去

Direction with 来 and 去

Structure Verb + 来 (toward me) / 去 (away from me)

After a movement verb, 来 means coming toward the speaker and 去 going away: 进来 ("come in, toward me"), 出去 ("go out, away from me"), 回来 ("come back here"), 上去 ("go up there"). The reference point is always the speaker. These are the simple directional complements; the compound ones (起来, 下去…) come later.
