HSK 1 Connectors & compound sentences

Joining nouns with 和 (and)

Structure Noun + 和 + Noun

和 (hé) means "and", but it ONLY joins nouns (or pronouns): 我和你 ("you and I"), 茶和咖啡 ("tea and coffee"). It does not join verbs or whole clauses like English "and": to link actions you don’t use 和 (you don’t say 我吃饭和看电视). For that, Chinese simply places one action after another.

Examples

  • huancháfēi

    I like tea and coffee.

  • shìpéngyou

    He and I are friends.

  • bamadōuzàijiā

Mom and Dad are both home.
