Doing something briefly with 一下

Structure Verb + 一下

一下 (yīxià) after the verb means doing the action "once" or "for a moment". It’s very close to reduplicating the verb (看看 ≈ 看一下) and likewise softens a request: 等一下 = "wait a moment". With an object, 一下 goes between verb and object: 看一下这本书.

Examples

请qǐng等děng一yī下xià。
Please wait a moment.
我wǒ看kàn一yī下xià手shǒu机jī。
Let me check my phone for a second.
你nǐ介jiè绍shào一yī下xià吧ba。
Go ahead and introduce yourself a bit.
