HSK 3 Special structures (把 · 被 · 是…的 · 让)

The 把 construction

Structure Subject + 把 + object + Verb + complement

The 把 (bǎ) sentence moves the OBJECT forward (after 把, before the verb) to say what is DONE to it and, above all, what HAPPENS to it in the end. That’s why the verb is hardly ever bare: it carries a complement (result, direction, 了, location…). 我把书放在桌子上 = "I put the book on the table". Use it when the object is specific and the action changes it or places it somewhere.

Examples

  • shūfàngzàizhuōzishàng

I put the book on the table.

  • qǐngménguānshàng

    Please close the door.

  • zuòzuòwánle

    He finished the homework.
