Not only… but also… (不但…而且…)

Structure 不但 + A，而且 + B

不但…而且… (bùdàn… érqiě…) adds two things in the same direction: "not only A, but ALSO B", with the second usually going further. 他不但会说中文，而且会写汉字. The full pair is the norm; 而且 can take 还/也 (而且还…).

Examples

他tā不bù但dàn会huì说shuō中zhōng文wén，而ér且qiě会huì写xiě汉hàn字zì。
He not only speaks Chinese but also writes characters.
这zhè个ge菜cài不bù但dàn好hǎo吃chī，而ér且qiě便pián宜yi。
This dish is not only tasty but also cheap.
她tā不bù但dàn聪cōng明míng，而ér且qiě努nǔ力lì。
She’s not only smart but also hardworking.
