If… then… (如果…就…)

Structure 如果 + condition，(就) + result

如果 (rúguǒ, "if") opens the condition and 就 (jiù, "then") opens the result, inside the second clause: 如果明天下雨，我就不去 = "if it rains tomorrow, I won’t go". 就 goes after the subject of the consequence. Colloquially, 如果 can be 要是. Sometimes 的话 is added at the end of the condition.

Examples

如rú果guǒ明míng天tiān下xià雨yǔ，我wǒ就jiù不bù去qù。
If it rains tomorrow, I won’t go.
如rú果guǒ你nǐ累lèi了le，就jiù休xiū息xi一yī下xià。
If you’re tired, take a rest.
如rú果guǒ有yǒu问wèn题tí，就jiù问wèn老lǎo师shī。
If you have questions, ask the teacher.
