Quite / equivalent to (相当)

Structure 相当 + adjective （/ 相当于 + amount or thing）

相当 (xiāngdāng) has two uses. (1) As a degree adverb, "quite, considerably": 这次考试相当难 = "this exam was quite hard" (stronger than 很, weaker than 非常). (2) 相当于 = "is equivalent to, amounts to": 一公里相当于两里 = "one kilometer equals two li". Note: 当 here reads dāng (first tone).

Examples

这zhè次cì考kǎo试shì相xiāng当dāng难nán。
This exam was quite hard.
一yī公gōng里lǐ相xiāng当dāng于yú两liǎng里lǐ。
One kilometer is equivalent to two li.
他tā的de中zhōng文wén水shuǐ平píng相xiāng当dāng高gāo。
His Chinese level is quite high.
