HSK 6 Verb usage

备受 / 深受 / 饱受 / 广受 …

To receive / suffer to the utmost (备受 / 深受 / 饱受 / 广受)

Structure 备受/深受/饱受/广受 + disyllabic object (爱戴 · 争议 · 折磨 · 欢迎)

These four verbs fuse a degree or scope adverb onto 受 (shòu, "to receive, to suffer") and work as literary quasi-passives: the subject is the one on the receiving end. 备受 = "to receive to the fullest" (备 = utterly): 备受争议 "highly controversial", 备受瞩目 "closely watched". 深受 = "to receive deeply": 深受爱戴 "deeply beloved", 深受影响. 饱受 carries a sense of prolonged suffering: 饱受折磨 "to suffer endless torment". 广受 = "to receive widely": 广受欢迎 "widely welcomed". They almost always take a disyllabic abstract object and belong to journalism and the essay; everyday speech would say 很受 (很受欢迎) or a 被 passive.
