HSK 6 Verb usage

受到 / 遭到 / 遭受

To receive / to suffer (受到 / 遭到 / 遭受 — quasi-passives)

Structure Subject + 受到/遭到/遭受 + abstract noun

受到, 遭到 and 遭受 are quasi-passive verbs: the subject "receives" or "undergoes" something, with no need for 被. They take an ABSTRACT object: 受到好评 = "to receive praise"; 遭到反对 = "to meet with opposition"; 遭受损失 = "to suffer losses". Emotional charge sets them apart: 受到 (shòudào) is NEUTRAL and works for good or bad (受到欢迎/批评/影响); 遭到 (zāodào) and 遭受 (zāoshòu) are always NEGATIVE. Of these two, 遭到 takes a punctual act and usually pairs with action nouns (遭到拒绝/破坏/袭击), whereas 遭受 takes a process or harm endured over time (遭受损失/灾害/痛苦). Written and journalistic register.
