The rest / the others (其余)

Structure Mentioned part，其余（的）+ remainder = "… and the rest / the others"

其余 (qíyú) means "the rest / the others": what remains of a set once the already-mentioned part is taken out. 一半留下，其余的都走了 = "half stayed, the rest all left". It belongs to the written, formal register, typical of expository prose and reports. The contrast with 其中 is sharp: 其中 points to ONE part of the set, whereas 其余 names what is LEFT OVER after that part is set aside. It often takes 的 when used as a noun (其余的), though it can stand directly before a noun.

Examples

一yī半bàn留liú下xià，其qí余yú的de都dōu走zǒu了le。
Half stayed; the rest all left.
前qián三sān名míng获huò奖jiǎng，其qí余yú选xuǎn手shǒu仅jǐn获huò参cān与yù证zhèng书shū。
The top three win prizes; the remaining contestants get only a certificate of participation.
除chú核hé心xīn条tiáo款kuǎn外wài，其qí余yú内nèi容róng仍réng在zài协xié商shāng之zhī中zhōng。
