To leave at the mercy of / let (任凭/听凭)

Structure 任凭/听凭 + (agent) + verb （or connector: 任凭 + supposition，也…）

任凭 (rènpíng) and 听凭 (tīngpíng) mean to leave something wholly at the mercy of, or surrender to the will of, someone or something: you give up intervening and let it run its course. As a verb, 任凭/听凭 + agent + action: 他任凭命运摆布 = "he lets fate toss him around"; 一切听凭您安排 = "everything is left to your arrangement". 任凭 also works as a concessive connector, 任凭…也… = "no matter how…, still…", more literary than 无论…都… (HSK 4). 听凭 is somewhat more formal and only verbal.

Examples

他tā任rèn凭píng命mìng运yùn摆bǎi布bù，从cóng不bù反fǎn抗kàng。
He lets fate toss him around and never resists.
一yī切qiè听tīng凭píng您nín安ān排pái，我wǒ没méi有yǒu意yì见jiàn。
Everything is left to your arrangement; I have no objection.
任rèn凭píng风fēng浪làng再zài大dà，渔yú船chuán也yě照zhào常cháng出chū海hǎi。
No matter how rough the waves, the fishing boats still put out to sea as usual.
任rèn凭píng你nǐ怎zěn么me劝quàn，他tā也yě不bù肯kěn回huí头tóu。
No matter how you try to persuade him, he won't turn back.
