Rather too / a bit too (未免)

Structure 未免 + 太/过于 + (over-the-top) judgment

未免 (wèimiǎn) introduces a softened judgment that something goes too far: «that really is a bit…». It opens an evaluative clause and is almost always followed by 太 or 过于: 你这样说未免太过分了 = «putting it that way is, frankly, going a little too far». It tempers a criticism (not a flat «no», but a polite reproach). Mind its two neighbours: 难免 (HSK 5) says something is unavoidable, and 不免 marks a natural consequence; 未免, by contrast, is always the speaker's reproach of excess.

Examples

你nǐ这zhè样yàng说shuō未wèi免miǎn太tài过guò分fèn了le。
Putting it that way is, frankly, going a bit too far.
为wèi这zhè点diǎn小xiǎo事shì生shēng气qì，未wèi免miǎn太tài计jì较jiào了le。
Getting angry over such a trifle is rather too petty.
这zhè个ge结jié论lùn下xià得de未wèi免miǎn太tài草cǎo率shuài。
Drawing that conclusion is somewhat too hasty.
一yī次cì就jiù要yāo求qiú这zhè么me多duō，未wèi免miǎn过guò于yú苛kē刻kè。
Demanding so much all at once is rather too harsh.
