May / can (permission) with 可以

Structure Subject + 可以 + Verb

可以 (kěyǐ) is "can" in the sense of having permission or something being feasible: 我可以进来吗？ = "may I come in?". For asking or granting permission it’s the natural word. It overlaps with 能; the usual negative is 不能 ("can’t") or 不可以 ("not allowed").

Examples

我wǒ可kě以yǐ进jìn来lái吗ma？
May I come in?
你nǐ可kě以yǐ坐zuò这zhè里lǐ。
You can sit here.
现xiàn在zài可kě以yǐ走zǒu了le。
We can go now.
