HSK 2 Modal verbs

应该

Should with 应该

Structure Subject + 应该 + Verb

应该 (yīnggāi) is "should / ought to", for advice or a reasonable obligation: 你应该多休息 = "you should rest more". Negate with 不应该 ("shouldn’t"). It’s often shortened to 该. It expresses what’s right or expected, without the force of a command.

Examples

  • yīnggāiduōxiūxi

    You should rest more.

  • menyīnggāibāngzhù

    We should help him.

  • yīnggāichídào

    You shouldn’t be late.

Levels are indicative: they follow the standard Chinese Grammar Wiki (AllSet Learning) progression, not an official HSK 3.0 mapping. We never assign levels by eye.
