因为 … 所以 …

Because… so… (因为…所以…)

Structure 因为 + cause,所以 + consequence

Chinese marks cause and effect with a pair: 因为 (because) opens the reason and 所以 (so) opens the result. 因为下雨,所以我们不去了. Unlike English, using BOTH at once is normal. One can be dropped if the meaning is clear.

Examples

  • yīnwèixiàsuǒmenle

    Because it’s raining, we’re not going.

  • yīnwèimángsuǒméilái

    He didn’t come because he was busy.

  • yīnwèitàiguìleméimǎi

    I didn’t buy it because it was too expensive.
