Although… but… (虽然…但是…)

Structure 虽然 + fact，但是 + contrast

For contrast, Chinese again uses a pair: 虽然 (although) and 但是 (but / however). 虽然很累，但是很高兴 = "although I’m tired, I’m happy". Using BOTH is normal, which would sound redundant in English; in Chinese it’s correct. 但是 can be 可是.

Examples

虽suī然rán很hěn累lèi，但dàn是shì很hěn高gāo兴xìng。
Although I’m tired, I’m happy.
虽suī然rán下xià雨yǔ，但dàn是shì不bù冷lěng。
Although it’s raining, it’s not cold.
虽suī然rán很hěn贵guì，但dàn是shì很hěn好hǎo。
Although it’s expensive, it’s very good.
