HSK 3 Special structures (把 · 被 · 是…的 · 让)

The passive with 被

Structure Object + 被 + (agent) + Verb + complement

With 被 (bèi) the affected thing becomes the subject: "X was + past participle (by Y)". 我的手机被偷了 = "my phone was stolen". The doer (agent) goes after 被 and can be dropped: 杯子被打破了. As in the 把 sentence, the verb takes a complement (了, result…). Chinese uses it less than English/Spanish passives, and it often carries a negative or unwanted nuance.

Examples

  • deshǒubèitōule

    My phone was stolen.

  • bēizibèile

The cup was broken by him.

  • dàngāobèichīwánle

    The cake was all eaten.

Levels are indicative: they follow the standard Chinese Grammar Wiki (AllSet Learning) progression, not an official HSK 3.0 mapping. We never assign levels by eye.
