Making / letting with 让

Structure A + 让 + B + Verb

让 (ràng) is the causative: A 让 B + verb = "A makes B (do something)" or "A lets B…". 老师让我们读课文 = "the teacher has us read the text". B is both the object of 让 and the subject of the second action. Negate before 让: 妈妈不让我玩 = "Mom won’t let me play". Close relatives: 叫 and 使.

Examples

老lǎo师shī让ràng我wǒ们men读dú课kè文wén。
The teacher has us read the text.
妈mā妈ma不bù让ràng我wǒ玩wán游yóu戏xì。
Mom won’t let me play games.
这zhè个ge电diàn影yǐng让ràng我wǒ很hěn感gǎn动dòng。
This movie moved me a lot.
