As long as… (只要…就…)

Structure 只要 + sufficient condition，就 + result

只要…就… (zhǐyào… jiù…) gives a SUFFICIENT condition: A happening is enough for B. 只要努力，就能成功 = "as long as you work hard, you’ll succeed". Don’t confuse it with 只有…才… ("only if…"), which marks a NECESSARY, stricter condition.

Examples

只zhǐ要yào努nǔ力lì，就jiù能néng成chéng功gōng。
As long as you work hard, you can succeed.
只zhǐ要yào你nǐ来lái，我wǒ就jiù高gāo兴xìng。
As long as you come, I’m happy.
只zhǐ要yào有yǒu时shí间jiān，我wǒ就jiù看kàn书shū。
