不得不

Structure 不得不 + Verb

不得不 (bùdébù) is a double negative meaning "have no choice but to, be forced to": 太晚了,我不得不走了 = "it got so late I had to leave". It stresses obligation under external pressure. Similar to 只好, but it focuses on the unavoidable NECESSITY.

    I have to admit he’s right.

  • méiqiánlezhǎogōngzuò

    Out of money, he was forced to find a job.

  • tàiwǎnlezǒule

    It was so late I had to leave.
