On the contrary with 反而

Structure (the expected did not happen)，反而 + the opposite

反而 (fǎn’ér) marks that the OPPOSITE of what you’d expect happens: 吃了药，病反而更重了 = "he took the medicine and, far from improving, got worse". It often follows a negated first part (不但没…，反而…). It goes before the verb of the surprise.

Examples

吃chī了le药yào，病bìng反fǎn而ér更gèng重zhòng了le。
He took the medicine and got even worse.
他tā不bù但dàn不bù感gǎn谢xiè，反fǎn而ér生shēng气qì了le。
Not only did he not thank me, he got angry instead.
雨yǔ不bù但dàn没méi停tíng，反fǎn而ér更gèng大dà了le。
The rain didn’t stop; it got heavier instead.
