反而

On the contrary with 反而

Structure (the expected did not happen),反而 + the opposite

反而 (fǎn’ér) marks that the OPPOSITE of what you’d expect happens: 吃了药,病反而更重了 = "he took the medicine and, far from improving, got worse". It often follows a negated first part (不但没…,反而…). It goes before the verb of the surprise.

Examples

  • chīleyàobìngfǎnérgèngzhòngle

    He took the medicine and got even worse.

  • dàngǎnxièfǎnérshēngle

    Not only did he not thank me, he got angry instead.

  • dànméitíngfǎnérgèngle

    The rain didn’t stop; it got heavier instead.
