Afterwards (in the past) with 后来

Structure (past 1)，后来 + (past 2)

后来 (hòulái) means "afterwards, later", but ONLY for narrating something already past, within a story: 他后来去了北京 = "later he went to Beijing". It can’t be used for the future: for "after" something in the future you use 以后. 后来 links two moments of a story that already happened.

Later he went to Beijing.
