HSK 4 Special structures (把 · 被 · 是…的 · 让)

使

To make (formal) with 使

Structure A + 使 + B + adjective/verb

使 (shǐ) is the more formal or written causative: A 使 B + (state/change) = "A makes B (feel or become…)". 这件事使我很难过 = "this made me very sad". It’s a relative of 让, but 使 sounds more abstract and literary, and is used mainly with feelings and changes, not concrete commands.

Examples

  • zhèjiànshì使shǐhěnnánguò

    This made me very sad.

  • yùndòng使shǐrénjiànkāng

    Exercise makes people healthy.

  • dehuà使shǐjiāhěngǎndòng

    His words moved everyone.

Levels are indicative: they follow the standard Chinese Grammar Wiki (AllSet Learning) progression, not an official HSK 3.0 mapping. We never assign levels by eye.
