That’s all / nothing more (罢了)

Structure （只是 / 不过 …）+ clause + 罢了

罢了 (bàle) goes at the end of a sentence to play things down: "… that’s all, … nothing more". 我只是开个玩笑罢了 = "I was just joking, that’s all". It usually pairs with 只是/不过 at the start, which reinforce the "it’s no big deal". It’s colloquial and takes the drama out of what’s said.

Examples

我wǒ只zhǐ是shì开kāi个ge玩wán笑xiào罢bà了le。
I was just joking, that’s all.
这zhè不bù过guò是shì小xiǎo事shì罢bà了le。
It’s nothing but a small matter.
我wǒ也yě只zhǐ是shì猜cāi测cè罢bà了le。
It’s just a guess on my part, that’s all.
