Even if / no matter how… (哪怕…也…)

Structure 哪怕 + extreme case，也 + result

哪怕…也… (nǎpà… yě…) sets up an extreme or unlikely supposition and says the result still holds: 哪怕下大雨，我也要去 = "even if it pours, I’ll still go". It’s very close to 即使…也… but sounds more colloquial and emphatic. The second clause almost always closes with 也 (sometimes 都).

Examples

哪nǎ怕pà下xià大dà雨yǔ，我wǒ也yě要yào去qù。
Even if it pours, I’ll still go.
哪nǎ怕pà再zài贵guì，他tā也yě要yào买mǎi。
No matter how expensive it is, he’ll buy it.
哪nǎ怕pà只zhǐ有yǒu一yī点diǎn希xī望wàng，也yě不bù能néng放fàng弃qì。
Even if there’s only a sliver of hope, you can’t give up.
