This / said / the aforementioned

Structure 此 + noun · 该 + noun · 上述 + noun (= 这个/那个 in documents)

此 (cǐ), 该 (gāi) and 上述 (shàng shù) are the demonstratives of administrative, legal and journalistic register, where they replace colloquial 这个 / 那个. 此 is "this" in written language (此事 "this matter", 此外 "besides"). 该 picks up something already named: "said / the aforementioned" (该项目 "the said project", 该规定 "said regulation"); it never opens a text, always pointing back. 上述 means "the above-mentioned / the aforesaid" (上述规定 "the rules cited above"). All three lend distance and formality and seldom appear in conversation.

Examples

此cǐ事shì关guān系xì重zhòng大dà，必bì须xū慎shèn重zhòng处chǔ理lǐ。
This matter is of great importance and must be handled carefully.
该gāi公gōng司sī因yīn违wéi反fǎn规guī定dìng被bèi处chǔ以yǐ罚fá款kuǎn。
The said company was fined for breaching the regulations.
上shàng述shù问wèn题tí将jiāng在zài下xià次cì会huì议yì上shàng讨tǎo论lùn。
The aforementioned issues will be discussed at the next meeting.
该gāi项xiàng目mù已yǐ于yú上shàng述shù期qī限xiàn内nèi顺shùn利lì完wán成chéng。
The said project was successfully completed within the aforementioned deadline.
