HSK 6 Verb usage

得以 + 动词

得以 + verb (be enabled to)

Structure Subject + 得以 + verb (achieved result)

得以 (déyǐ) is a formal modal meaning "to be enabled to", "to finally manage to": it announces that something difficult is achieved thanks to a prior condition. 问题终于得以解决 = "the problem could finally be resolved". Unlike 能 or 可以 (HSK 1-3), which express neutral ability or permission, 得以 stresses that an obstacle was removed and the result reached; it always precedes a two-syllable verb and takes no direct object after it. Found in reports, press and essays. The pattern "thanks to X, Y 得以 + V" is common.
