Even if / even though (即便…也/亦…)

Structure 即便 + supposition，也 / 亦 + result

即便…也… (jíbiàn… yě…) raises an extreme supposition or a concession and states the result still holds: 即便失败，这段经历也值得 = "even if it fails, this experience is worthwhile". It is the FORMAL variant of 即使…也… (HSK 4): same meaning, but native to journalism and essay prose. In the most literary closing, 也 can be replaced by 亦 (yì): 即便如此，问题亦未解决 = "even so, the problem remains unsolved".

Examples

即jí便biàn失shī败bài，这zhè段duàn经jīng历lì也yě值zhí得dé。
Even if it fails, this experience is worthwhile.
即jí便biàn如rú此cǐ，问wèn题tí亦yì未wèi解jiě决jué。
Even so, the problem remains unsolved.
即jí便biàn代dài价jià高gāo昂áng，我wǒ们men也yě必bì须xū坚jiān持chí下xià去qù。
Even if the cost is steep, we must press on.
即jí便biàn证zhèng据jù确què凿záo，他tā亦yì拒jù不bù承chéng认rèn。
Even with conclusive evidence, he still refuses to admit it.
