Even so / that said (尽管如此 / 话虽如此)

Structure [statement]。尽管如此 / 话虽如此，+ contrary qualification

尽管如此 (jǐnguǎn rúcǐ) and 话虽如此 (huà suī rúcǐ) are concessive closing phrases that point ANAPHORICALLY back to what was just said —«如此» = "so / thus"— and then introduce the reservation. 尽管如此 ("even so, despite all that") is more neutral and written: 证据不足，尽管如此，他仍坚持己见. 话虽如此 ("that said, granted that's true") first concedes the other party's point and then qualifies it: it belongs more to debate and cultivated speech. Unlike the 尽管 of HSK 5, which precedes the conceded clause, here that clause has already been stated and the phrase gathers it up whole.

Examples

证zhèng据jù不bù足zú，尽jǐn管guǎn如rú此cǐ，他tā仍réng坚jiān持chí己jǐ见jiàn。
The evidence is thin; even so, he clings to his own view.
你nǐ说shuō得de有yǒu理lǐ，话huà虽suī如rú此cǐ，风fēng险xiǎn还hái是shì太tài大dà。
You have a point; that said, the risk is still too great.
市shì场chǎng前qián景jǐng看kàn好hǎo，尽jǐn管guǎn如rú此cǐ，公gōng司sī仍réng保bǎo持chí谨jǐn慎shèn。
The market outlook is favorable; even so, the company stays cautious.
他tā的de理lǐ论lùn自zì成chéng一yī家jiā，话huà虽suī如rú此cǐ，证zhèng据jù尚shàng显xiǎn薄bó弱ruò。
