HSK 6 Pronouns & determiners

任何

Any whatsoever (任何)

Structure 任何 + (noun) … 都/也 + predicate

任何 (rènhé) is the formal determiner for «any whatsoever», with no exception: 任何人 = «anyone / no one», 任何情况下 = «under any circumstances». Unlike colloquial 什么…都 (HSK 3), 任何 belongs to written and administrative register, and it almost always requires a 都 or 也 correlate in the predicate to seal the «without exception» reading: 任何人都不能例外 = «no one, whoever they are, is exempt». In negative clauses it means «no / not any»: 不接受任何借口 = «no excuse is accepted».
