相比之下 (xiāngbǐ zhī xià) is a textual contrast connector: "by comparison", "in contrast". It opens a sentence after something has already been mentioned, linking to a second term to assess the difference: 旧方案问题不少；相比之下，新方案更稳妥 = "the old plan has plenty of problems; by comparison, the new one is sounder". Unlike 比起…来 (HSK 5), which packs both terms into one clause, 相比之下 picks up what was just said and starts a new sentence; the 之下 ("under that") has a written flavour. Common in news, reports and essays.

Examples

旧jiù方fāng案àn漏lòu洞dòng不bù少shǎo；相xiāng比bǐ之zhī下xià，新xīn方fāng案àn更gèng稳wěn妥tuǒ。
The old plan has quite a few flaws; by comparison, the new one is sounder.
南nán方fāng湿shī润rùn多duō雨yǔ，相xiāng比bǐ之zhī下xià，北běi方fāng则zé显xiǎn得de格gé外wài干gān燥zào。
The south is humid and rainy; in contrast, the north comes across as especially dry.
去qù年nián增zēng长zhǎng强qiáng劲jìng，相xiāng比bǐ之zhī下xià，今jīn年nián的de表biǎo现xiàn略lüè显xiǎn平píng淡dàn。
Last year's growth was robust; by comparison, this year's performance looks rather flat.
他tā经jīng验yàn丰fēng富fù，相xiāng比bǐ之zhī下xià，我wǒ还hái差chà得de远yuǎn。
He's highly experienced; by comparison, I still fall far short.
