HSK 6 Comparison

相比之下,…

By comparison / in contrast (相比之下)

Structure (Topic A,)相比之下,B + assessment

相比之下 (xiāngbǐ zhī xià) is a textual contrast connector: "by comparison", "in contrast". It opens a sentence after something has already been mentioned, linking to a second term to assess the difference: 旧方案问题不少;相比之下,新方案更稳妥 = "the old plan has plenty of problems; by comparison, the new one is sounder". Unlike 比起…来 (HSK 5), which packs both terms into one clause, 相比之下 picks up what was just said and starts a new sentence; the 之下 ("under that") has a written flavour. Common in news, reports and essays.
