Besides / except with 除了…以外

Structure 除了 + X + 以外，… 都 / 还 …

除了…以外 (chúle… yǐwài) has TWO meanings depending on what follows. With 都 = "except": 除了我以外，大家都来了 ("everyone came except me"). With 还/也 = "besides": 除了中文，他还会说英文 ("besides Chinese, he also speaks English"). The 以外 is optional. The following word (都 vs 还) sets the meaning.

Examples

除chú了le我wǒ以yǐ外wài，大dà家jiā都dōu来lái了le。
Everyone came except me.
除chú了le中zhōng文wén，他tā还hái会huì说shuō英yīng文wén。
Besides Chinese, he also speaks English.
我wǒ除chú了le周zhōu末mò，每měi天tiān都dōu上shàng班bān。
I work every day except weekends.
