Rather than… better… (与其…不如…)

Structure 与其 + A，不如 + B

与其…不如… (yǔqí… bùrú…) weighs two options and prefers the second: "rather than (doing) A, better B". 与其在家等，不如出去走走 = "rather than wait at home, better go out for a walk". It recommends B as the wiser choice over A.

Examples

与yǔ其qí在zài家jiā等děng，不bù如rú出chū去qù走zǒu走zou。
Rather than wait at home, better go out for a walk.
与yǔ其qí坐zuò车chē，不bù如rú走zǒu路lù。
Rather than take the car, better walk.
与yǔ其qí买mǎi新xīn的de，不bù如rú修xiū一yī下xià。
Rather than buy a new one, better fix it.
