Thereby / thus (从而)

Structure Means / action，从而 + result achieved

从而 (cóng’ér) links a MEANS with the RESULT that means makes possible: "thereby…". 新技术降低了成本，从而提高了利润 = "the new technology cut costs, thereby raising profits". Unlike 因而 (general cause→effect), 从而 stresses that the first part is the method or step leading to the second. Very formal/written.

Examples

他tā努nǔ力lì学xué习xí，从cóng而ér考kǎo上shàng了le大dà学xué。
He studied hard and thereby got into university.
新xīn技jì术shù降jiàng低dī了le成chéng本běn，从cóng而ér提tí高gāo了le利lì润rùn。
The new technology cut costs, thereby raising profits.
多duō运yùn动dòng可kě以yǐ增zēng强qiáng体tǐ质zhì，从cóng而ér少shǎo生shēng病bìng。
