Structure 鉴于 + circumstance，(subject) + decision　／　鉴于此 · 有鉴于此，+ decision

鉴于 (jiànyú) is a highly formal prepositional connector (documents, regulations, resolutions) that introduces the weighed-up reason for a decision: "in view of / given that". 鉴于情况特殊，特此说明 = "given the exceptional nature of the situation, the following is hereby stated". Unlike 由于 (a neutral cause, HSK 4), 鉴于 implies the circumstance has been deliberated before deciding, so it is almost always followed by a measure or ruling. When the reason has already been stated in the previous sentence, the anaphoric phrases 鉴于此 and, more emphatic, 有鉴于此 ("in view of this / in light of the above") are used. 鉴 is read jiàn; 于 is read yú.

Examples

鉴jiàn于yú情qíng况kuàng特tè殊shū，特tè此cǐ说shuō明míng。
Given the exceptional nature of the situation, the following is hereby stated.
有yǒu鉴jiàn于yú此cǐ，公gōng司sī特tè作zuò如rú下xià规guī定dìng。
In view of this, the company hereby lays down the following provisions.
鉴jiàn于yú双shuāng方fāng分fēn歧qí严yán重zhòng，谈tán判pàn暂zàn时shí中zhōng止zhǐ。
Given the serious differences between the two sides, the talks are suspended for now.
鉴jiàn于yú他tā态tài度dù诚chéng恳kěn，从cóng轻qīng处chǔ理lǐ。
In view of his sincere attitude, the matter is dealt with leniently.
