HSK 6 Connectors & compound sentences
再者 / 此外 / 况且 / 加之
Furthermore / besides / moreover (再者 / 此外 / 况且)
Structure … (first point),再者 / 此外 / 况且 / 加之 + added point
Four additive connectors of cultivated register that chain reasons together, in two shades. To LIST another point of equal weight: 此外 (cǐwài, "besides this / in addition") and 再者 (zàizhě, "furthermore / for another thing"), which simply add one more argument. To REINFORCE with a clinching reason: 况且 (kuàngqiě, "moreover / what's more, on top of that") adds a weighty reason that props up what was said, and 加之 (jiāzhī, "added to which / coupled with this") is the most written, typical of chains of causes converging on one result (天气恶劣,加之准备不足 "bad weather, coupled with poor preparation…"). Against the colloquial 而且 (HSK 4), all four belong to argumentative prose. 者 is read zhě; 之 is read zhī.
