基于 / 出于 …
Based on / out of (基于/出于)
Structure 基于 + grounds,… / 出于 + motive/feeling,…
基于 (jīyú) and 出于 (chūyú) both open the reason for an action, but point at different things. 基于 marks the objective GROUNDS, the data or considerations a decision rests on: 基于上述考虑,我们决定推迟 = "based on the above, we decided to postpone it". 出于 marks the MOTIVE or feeling that gives rise to the action, what drives it from within: 出于安全考虑 = "out of safety concerns", 出于好意 = "out of goodwill". In short: 基于 = what it rests on; 出于 = what it springs from.
Examples
- 基于上述考虑,公司决定暂缓投资。
Based on the above considerations, the company decided to defer the investment.
- 出于安全考虑,这条路暂时封闭。
Out of safety concerns, this road is temporarily closed.
- 他这么说完全是出于好意。
He said it entirely out of goodwill.
- 这项政策是基于多年的研究制定的。
This policy was drawn up based on years of research.
