Not yet / not (formal 未)

Structure 未 + Verb （= 没(有) + Verb, written register）

未 (wèi) is the formal negation of what has not yet happened or not been realized: it is equivalent to 没(有) but belongs to written prose. 事情尚未解决 = «the matter is not yet resolved»; 未能如愿 = «failed to get his wish». It negates the realization of an event (past or still pending), never a pure stative adjective the way 不 does. It underlies several high-register set phrases: 尚未 (not yet), 未必 (not necessarily), 未尝 (it's not that… not), 前所未有 (unprecedented). Unlike everyday spoken 没有 (HSK 1), 未 sounds like a document, the press, or written language.

Examples

此cǐ事shì尚shàng未wèi得dé到dào妥tuǒ善shàn解jiě决jué。
This matter has not yet been properly resolved.
他tā几jǐ经jīng努nǔ力lì，仍réng未wèi能néng如rú愿yuàn。
After several attempts, he still failed to get his wish.
报bào告gào中zhōng的de数shù据jù未wèi经jīng核hé实shí，不bù得dé引yǐn用yòng。
The figures in the report have not been verified and may not be cited.
这zhè种zhǒng现xiàn象xiàng在zài历lì史shǐ上shàng前qián所suǒ未wèi有yǒu。
