HSK 6 Adverbs

行将 / 即将

About to / on the verge of (行将 / 即将)

Structure Subject + 即将 / 行将 + Verb

Both adverbs mark imminence («about to…») and go before the verb, belonging to written register. 即将 (jíjiāng) is the more common one, standard in the press and announcements: 会议即将开始 = «the meeting is about to begin». 行将 (xíngjiāng) is distinctly more literary and almost always precedes verbs of ending, decline, or change: 旧时代行将结束 = «the old era is drawing to a close». Unlike colloquial 快要…了 / 就要…了 (HSK 2-3), which close with 了 and sound spoken, 即将 and 行将 take no 了 and belong to cultivated language. 行将 also keeps a solemn, almost epigraphic tone.
