HSK 6 Connectors & compound sentences

无论如何 / 总归

In any case / after all (无论如何 / 总归)

Structure 无论如何,+ insistence / … 总归 + resigned conclusion

Although both wrap things up, their nuance differs. 无论如何 (wú lùn rú hé, “whatever happens, in any case”) insists that something will be done or upheld regardless of circumstances; it carries determination or entreaty. 总归 (zǒng guī, “after all, in the end”) introduces a conclusion there is no escaping, often with a tone of resignation or self-evident truth: 孩子总归是孩子 = “a child is, after all, a child”. 无论如何 looks forward (what must be achieved); 总归 closes by acknowledging the inevitable.
