HSK 6 Connectors & compound sentences

以便 / 以求

So that / in order to (以便 / 以求)

Structure Action,以便 / 以求 + purpose

以便 (yǐbiàn) and 以求 (yǐqiú) open a PURPOSE clause placed after the main action: 请留下电话,以便联系 = "please leave your phone number so that we can reach you". 以便 aims at FACILITATING something (making it convenient or possible), whereas 以求 conveys that an end is SOUGHT or pursued: 不断努力,以求成功 = "to strive ceaselessly in order to succeed". Both are written, formal register. The HSK 5 relative is 以免 / 免得 (hsk5-miande), which instead introduces a NEGATIVE purpose ("so as to avoid…").
