Structure Circumstance (disyllabic) + 之下，result

… 之下 (… zhī xià) is a fixed, formal nominal closing: it marks the circumstance or state of mind UNDER which something happens. Unlike 在…下 (HSK 5), the context is EMBEDDED right before 之下, with no 在 at the start, and it almost always forms a fixed two-syllable block: 情急之下 ("in the urgency of the moment"), 无奈之下 ("having no choice"), 一怒之下 ("in a fit of anger"). It is written and narrative in register, common in journalism and storytelling; it sounds more literary and compact than 在…情况下.

Examples

情qíng急jí之zhī下xià，他tā跳tiào进jìn河hé里lǐ救jiù人rén。
In the urgency of the moment, he jumped into the river to save someone.
无wú奈nài之zhī下xià，他tā们men只zhǐ好hǎo取qǔ消xiāo了le演yǎn出chū。
Having no other choice, they had no option but to cancel the show.
一yī怒nù之zhī下xià，她tā辞cí掉diào了le工gōng作zuò。
In a fit of anger, she quit her job.
百bǎi般bān无wú奈nài之zhī下xià，公gōng司sī宣xuān布bù裁cái员yuán。
With no alternative whatsoever, the company announced layoffs.
